In July 2016, villagers in Phichit Province gathered on the public way while vehicles of Akara Mining Company were passing by. The company later filed complaint against the villagers for extortion, claiming that the villagers block the road and prevent the company vehicles from traveling freely. In February 2017, the prosecutor charged 27 villagers for extortion under section 309 of the Criminal Code. The prosecutor also added charge under Public Assembly Act in its prosecution order.
