Defendant Background

Chainarin served as a member of Democratic Labor Group in 2000. He worked as a freelance academic writer in 2002 and became a consulting teacher at a private school in 2007. Two years later, he was a political talk radio jockey at a community channel before working as a program moderator for a cable TV station in 2010. He is well known as a political activist, Hyde Park speaker, political coordinator, and political analyst.

Allegation

On June 1, 2014, around the fountain in front of Siam Paragon shopping mall, 5 people protested against the coup d’état by standing in a row and raising A4 sheets that read “the coup makers fear A4 paper, A4 paper is coming to you now.” There is also a person who read poems criticizing the coup.    

Circumstance of Arrest

On June 3, 2014, Chainarin was apprehended by soldiers and police officers at his house. However, searching the house has not been reported. He was first taken to Royal Thai Army Club, Viphavadi Road to discuss with the military who attempted to convince him to sacrifice himself for the nation. Afterwards, he had been detained at the office of the Crime Suppression Division for 7 days prior to being charged with an offence.

Chainarin was then taken to military court in Bangkok. The court decided to release him on bail. With assistance by a probono lawyer from "Free Thai Legal Aid" (FTLA), a bond of THB 100,000 for bail was deposited.
